What is natural astaxanthin?

Natural astaxanthin is a carotenoid, like lycopene in tomatoes and β-carotene in carrots, and is an approved antioxidant ingredient for dietary supplements and foods. It has antioxidant activity in the body. In nature, salmon store natural astaxanthin in their muscles to give them the endurance to swim upstream to spawn. They transfer astaxanthin to their roe to protect the roe DNA from being damaged by the UV rays in sunlight.

What is the source of astaxanthin?

All of our AstaReal natural astaxanthin is extracted from the natural freshwater green algae Haematococcus pluvialis. It is a non-GMO astaxanthin source.

How is astaxanthin produced?

We grow non-GMO natural Haematococcus algae, a source of astaxanthin, at our cultivation facility in Moses Lake, WA, under strict controls. Haematococcus algae are grown under artificial light in a clean, sealed, indoor facility. By growing Haematococcus algae indoors, we prevent contamination by dirt, organisms, and other substances.

How much astaxanthin should I take?

To experience the optimal effects of astaxanthin, we recommend daily consumption of 12 mg (2 Astavita softgels). Moreover, to maximize absorption efficiency through the intestines, we recommend that both softgels be taken whole, with water, after breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Is there any specific daily requirement for astaxanthin?

The U.S. government and its regulatory authorities have not set a standard daily requirement. In the United States, up to 12 mg/day of astaxanthin as a supplement or food is generally recognized as safe. We recommend taking 12 mg/day based on past clinical results.

How much astaxanthin is usually present in food?

To get 12 mg of astaxanthin through food intake, a person would need to consume two medium-sized fillets of sockeye salmon. Crab and shrimp also contain a substantial amount of astaxanthin, particularly in their shells. However, you would have to consume an enormous amount of crab or shrimp to get 12 mg of astaxanthin. For example, you would have to eat crabmeat from 10 crabs to get the recommended amount. Taking astaxanthin in supplemental form allows you to avoid excess salt and cholesterol consumption that would result from consuming 12 mg of astaxanthin from seafood.

Is it safe to consume a large amount of astaxanthin?

The recommended maximum intake of astaxanthin is 12 mg/day. According to clinical data, even if your consumption exceeds the recommended amount, it should not have any adverse effects on your body. However, if you have any concerns about any symptoms, please stop using the product at once and consult a physician.

What are the reasons for Astavita products and price modifications?

Recently we updated our Astavita line of products in terms of formulation and the daily amount of natural Astaxanthin according to:

  •    PURPOSE OF UPDATE: As the industry pioneer and market leader of natural Astaxanthin, Astavita aims to provide with the best Astaxanthin formulation. The changes (new amount and new formulation) reflect our commitment to keep improving quality and performance.
  •    NEW AMOUNT OF ASTAXANTHIN: In line with published studies and our internal research, we observed that the level of benefits from Astaxanthin tends to be “dose-dependent” up to a certain amount. Therefore within the current regulations, we are now recommending up to 12 mg per day of AstaReal natural Astaxanthin. Our current softgels are 6 mg each (the amount increase from 2 mg per softgel to 6 mg).
  •    NEW FORMULATION: In addition, according to the latest clinical studies, natural tocotorienol (so-called “Super Vitamin E”) enhances the beneficial antioxidant capability of natural Astaxanthin. Zinc (used in Astavita Sports) is known to significantly enhances an intracellular antioxidant capacity.

Please make sure to consult your physician to certify whether Astavita products are right for you if you have any concerns.

How should I store the supplement?

The ideal storage for Astavita’s dietary supplements would be in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. We recommend storing in these conditions before and after opening the bottles.

However, we do not recommend storing Astavita’s dietary supplements in the refrigerator or the freezer. This causes condensation to build up inside of the bottle and the soft gel capsules can harden which will lead to them breaking.

The ideal storage conditions for soft gels are room temperature (59–86 °F/15–30 °C) and a humidity of 40–60%.

When is it the best by? When should the products be consumed after opening?

Check the best by date on the bottom of the product package. Because the condition of the product is subject to storage conditions, ideally it is best to use the products within 3 months after opening. Replace the cap tightly and place the bottle in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.

What should I do if the softgels are stuck to the inside of the package?

Gently shake the bottle or gently tap a bottle on a table to release the softgels. Because the coating layer of the softgels softens at temperatures above body temperature (98.6 °F/37 °C) and in contact with moisture, they can or stick together if stored in a hot, humid place.

However, if moved to a cooler place, the softgel coating will become firm again. This does not affect the quality of the supplement, and you can continue to take it as normal. The ideal storage conditions for softgels are room temperature (59–86 °F/15–30 °C) and a humidity of 40–60%.

Softgels will easily break if you store them in a refrigerator for more than 1 month because the capsules harden. For the same reason, do not store the softgels in a freezer.
